You put in a lot of time and energy into your projects, and we want to make sure the finished project is as crisp and clear as possible for you. So let's dig into a #hotoffthepress printing tip... all about resolution!
"Resolution" is a measure of the sharpness of an image, usually expressed with the amount of pixels in the image. The measurement used is DPI, or dots-per-inch. The higher the number, the better the resolution, and the clearer your printed image will be.
300 DPI is your best bet as a go-to resolution. Our equipment prints at 300 DPI as standard, and our large format printer can go as high as 1200 DPI for super high resolution art reproduction. Lower resolution can be acceptable if an image is to be viewed from a distance, such as a poster from six feet away. In fact, sometimes billboards are printed at only 30 DPI.
So you might ask... why aren't all files just always 300 DPI or more? Well, the downside to a high resolution image is file size, which takes up more storage space in the digital world and requires a longer time to email, upload, run through software, and display on-screen. So most images you see online are 72 DPI for that reason.
So here's the bottom line:
1 - When you are creating and exporting your finished project, ensure that your settings include a proper resolution.
2 - Be careful when getting images from a digital source to ensure you are downloading or receiving an image that is a proper resolution.3 - In both of these cases, 300 DPI is a great standard.
